Rev Richard Suffern

Hello, and thanks for visiting our parish website.  I am married to Jacqui, an Occupational Therapist currently enjoying parish ministry as a full time Vicar's wife!  We have three children, Peter, working as a Civil Engineer based in Kingston upon Thames. Joanna, who is at UEA in Norwich training to be a Paramedic, and Katie who is studying chemistry at York University.
In my spare time I enjoy walking, especially in the hills, I play racquetball and the occasional game of golf, a recent highlight of which was winning the wooden spoon in the annual clergy tournament!

A BIT MORE ABOUT ME:

I became a Christian in my teens, while on my Confirmation retreat in fact! I had been persuaded to do Confirmation preparation by friends, and just drifted into it. However, we had a compelling and passionate speaker at our pre-Confirmation retreat through whom the love of God shone and I knew I needed what he had. So I came to trust in Jesus and what He has accomplished on the Cross and placed my trust in Him as my Lord and Saviour. The best decision I have ever made! Some years later I discovered more about the charismatic movement and at that time was blessed by being filled with the Holy Spirit and I seek to go on being so to this day.

My working background is in rural land management, and after school I did a degree at Reading University and then worked in a small firm of surveyors in rural north Norfolk for a few years. By that time I had been feeling the call to work overseas, and I had a particular interest in the work of TEAR Fund. So followed five years in Kenya, where I worked with the Church on a rural development project that also included establishing and building a Youth Polytechnic. I got well involved with the Church there, leading and preaching at services most weeks, and this meant I learnt the Swahili language quickly out of necessity! During this time I started sensing the call to ordained ministry, and after a year working as an assistant warden of St. George’s Crypt and Night Shelter in Leeds I trained at Trinity College Bristol. There followed a Curacy in Weymouth and then I was a Vicar in Cheltenham before becoming Rector at St. Margaret’s Whitnash and Warwick Gates Community Church. St. Margaret’s and WGCC are great Churches to be Rector of.

MY VISION AND HOPES:

My vision for the Church here is that we will fulfil our mission of “Receiving God’s love in Christ and sharing it with all.”  I love running Alpha and Christian discovery courses and events to help people find faith and grow in their faith in Jesus. My work includes the regular pastoral and other duties of being a Vicar, and I am also a governor of our wonderful Church School, - St. Margaret’s Junior. I maintain a close interest in and involvement with the Church in Africa. I am a Trustee of the African Pastors Fellowship and I re-visit Kenya from time to time and led a SOMA mission to South Sudan this year.

If I haven’t already done so, I hope to meet you at any of our services or events soon. God bless you abundantly with the best He has for you I finding and following Jesus,- “The Way, the Truth and the Life”

Blessings,
Richard
